7 Tips to Keep Your Area Rugs Looking Fresh for Years
By the Benchmark Team · Updated October 30, 2026 · 5 min read
Short answer: Vacuum gently every week, rotate the rug every three to six months, blot spills right away, put a quality pad underneath, keep it out of direct sun, treat the fringe gently, and have the rug professionally cleaned every one to two years. These seven habits stop most of the damage we see in rugs from Southwest Washington and the Portland area.

The 7 tips
- Vacuum the right way, every week. Use suction only or a gentle brush. Skip the beater bar on delicate, hand-knotted or fringed rugs. Go slowly and vacuum in more than one direction to lift grit before it grinds into the fibers.
- Rotate the rug every three to six months. Traffic paths and sunny spots cause uneven wear and fading. Turning the rug evens it out.
- Blot spills right away, and never rub. Use a clean white cloth and work from the outside in. A fast response keeps stains from setting, especially with red wine, pet accidents and muddy footprints.
- Always use a quality rug pad. A good pad stops slipping, adds cushion, protects the floor and reduces friction on the rug. Choose a breathable one so air can move underneath.
- Protect the rug from direct sunlight. Sun fades dyes. Use sheer curtains, window film, or move the rug away from bright windows.
- Treat the fringe and edges gently. Brush or vacuum the fringe by hand with a soft attachment, and avoid pulling or running the vacuum over it. Dirty, tangled fringe makes a good rug look tired fast.
- Schedule a professional cleaning. Vacuuming only reaches surface dirt. We recommend about every two years for normal use, or every 12 to 18 months with pets, children or a busy entry.
What a professional wash adds
Grit and fine soil settle deep in the pile and foundation, where a vacuum cannot reach. A professional wash starts with dry soil removal, then washes the rug by immersion and dries it in a controlled room.
