The Situation

A Vancouver homeowner called us about a natural wool 5×7 rug with a soft cream field and light blue accents in the pattern, a favorite piece in a high-traffic part of the home. Daily use had taken a toll. Pet accidents had left odors that would not go away, spots and stains had set into the wool, and the fringe had become soiled and dull. Vacuuming and surface cleaning could not fix it, and the light blue accents had lost some of their clarity.

What We Found

Natural wool holds onto soil and odor more than most people expect. At our plant we found pet urine that had wicked into the fibers and backing, several set-in spots and stains from everyday spills, and fringe packed with soil. Because the rug was natural wool, we needed a process that would clean thoroughly without damaging the fibers or changing the color. The arrival photos below show what we saw.

How We Cleaned This Wool Rug

  1. 1

    Pickup and inspection

We picked the rug up at no charge and inspected it at our plant, finding pet urine in the fibers and backing, set-in stains and soiled fringe.

  2. 2

    Dry soil extraction

Careful dry soil extraction removed the grit that can abrade the wool.

  3. 3

    Targeted pre-treatment

Stains and pet-affected areas were pre-treated before washing.

  4. 4

    Immersion wash

The rug was washed by immersion, which flushes soil and residue out of the pile.

  5. 5

    Enzymatic odor treatment

An enzymatic treatment broke down the source of the pet odor instead of masking it.

  6. 6

    Gentle fringe cleaning

The fringe was cleaned gently so the edges looked clean and even again.

  7. 7

    Controlled drying and grooming

Controlled drying and grooming restored the pile and brought the light blue accents back into focus.

The Result

The spots and stains lifted out and the fringe came clean. We treated the pet odor at its source with an enzymatic treatment, and if odor returns within 14 days we re-treat at no charge. Once the rug was dry and groomed, the natural wool looked brighter and the light blue details stood out again. Results depend on a rug’s age, dyes and wear, which is why we inspect first.

Care Tips for This Kind of Rug

  • Treat pet accidents quickly. Blot with a clean white cloth and avoid heat and steam on wool. Our first-aid guide has details.
  • Brush or vacuum the fringe gently, and keep the vacuum’s beater bar off the rug.
  • Plan a professional wash about every 2 years, or every 12 to 18 months in a home with pets.
