The Situation

A Portland homeowner who loves sustainable design found a natural sheep’s wool rug tucked among vintage fixtures and reclaimed wood at an architectural salvage shop. Hand-knotted, with floral patterns in earthy ivory, sage and rust, it suited her living room, but years of neglect had left heavy staining from unknown spills, dirt packed into the wool from storage, frayed fringe and worn, matted edges. She worried it was too far gone to risk bringing home.

What We Found

Natural sheep’s wool needs careful handling to avoid shrinking or color bleeding, and an old rug with unknown spills can behave unpredictably. The close-up photos below show the set-in stains and the worn fringe as the rug arrived. We inspected it and chose a gentle, low-agitation approach to protect the hand-knotted structure.

How We Cleaned This Vintage Wool Rug

  1. 1

    Inspection and dry soil removal

We inspected the rug and gently vacuumed and brushed out the loose dirt without water, so it would not be driven deeper into the wool.

  2. 2

    Stain pre-treatment

An enzyme-based treatment went on the stains, which looked like old spills and storage discoloration.

  3. 3

    Gentle immersion wash

The rug was washed in a pH-balanced bath with low agitation to protect the hand-knotted structure.

  4. 4

    Rinse and extraction

We rinsed out the residue and extracted the water carefully to limit moisture in the wool.

  5. 5

    Drying and grooming

The rug dried in a temperature-controlled room and was groomed to bring back the natural fluffiness of the pile.

  6. 6

Fringe and edge care, final check and delivery

The frayed fringe and edges were attended to by hand, the finished rug was checked, and it was delivered to the home.

The Result

After washing and careful drying, the rug came back with the set-in stains greatly reduced, fresher ivory, sage and rust colors and a plusher pile. It is an antique, so it still shows its age and character, and it now sits in the living room it was found for. Results depend on a rug’s age, dyes and condition, which is why we inspect and test first.

Care Tips for This Kind of Rug

  • Have a rug from a salvage or antique shop cleaned before it goes into your home. Old rugs can hold dirt and odor from storage.
  • Vacuum with suction only and avoid beater bars on hand-knotted wool. Keep the vacuum off frayed fringe.
  • Use a rug pad, and rotate the rug every few months so wear is even.

Questions About This Project

Can an antique or vintage wool rug from a salvage shop be cleaned?

Often, yes. We inspect the rug and test the dyes first, then wash it gently with low agitation. If a rug is too fragile to wash safely, we tell you before we start.

How much does it cost to clean an 8×10 vintage wool rug?

Wool rugs are $4.00 to $4.50 per square foot, so an 8×10 is about $320 to $360. Antique rugs, generally 100 years or older, are $5.00 to $5.50, or about $400 to $440. We confirm your price after inspection, and pickup and delivery are free within 35 miles.

Can old, unknown stains be removed from a wool rug?

Often they can be reduced a great deal, but results depend on what caused them and how long they have been set. We pre-treat the stains, and we tell you what to expect before we wash.

How long does it take?

Typical turnaround is 7 to 10 business days from pickup, including 24 to 48 hours of monitored drying.

Do you pick up rugs in Portland?
