The Situation

A Camas homeowner called us about a gray silk rug that had been the centerpiece of the living room for over a decade. Holiday gatherings, two energetic dogs and the mud of a rainy Pacific Northwest winter had left it with dark paths from foot traffic, colors that had faded toward a muddy brown and a faint musty smell. Vacuuming and spot cleaning at home had not helped, and the owner did not want to replace a family piece.

What We Found

Silk is delicate and absorbent, so harsh at-home cleaners can leave residue or water marks, and soil that sits in the pile weighs the fibers down and dulls the color. Our inspection confirmed a heavy-soiling job that was still fully salvageable with professional care.

How We Cleaned This Silk Rug

  1. 1

    Free pickup and inspection

We picked the rug up from the Camas home and inspected it at our Vancouver plant.

  2. 2

    Dry soil removal

Dry soil and pet hair were removed before any water touched the silk.

  3. 3

    Pre-treatment

A gentle enzymatic pre-treatment broke down oils and stains.

  4. 4

    Gentle immersion wash

The rug was washed in a pH-balanced bath and rinsed several times to carry out the soil.

  5. 5

    Extraction and climate-controlled drying

Excess water was extracted and the rug dried in our climate-controlled room to help prevent shrinking.

  6. 6

    Grooming and delivery

We groomed the pile and delivered the rug back to the home.

The Result

After a full immersion wash and careful drying, the rug came back with cleaner, brighter color and the dark traffic paths lifted. It went back to the Camas home. Results depend on a rug’s age, dyes and wear, which is why we inspect and test first.

Care Tips for This Kind of Rug

  • Avoid spot cleaning silk at home. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and call a professional.
  • Vacuum silk with suction only, and keep the vacuum off the fringe.
  • Dry any wet silk rug flat with airflow on both sides and call us quickly. Lingering moisture can cause odor and damage.

Questions About This Project

Can a heavily soiled silk rug be cleaned?

Often, yes. Silk is delicate, so we inspect the rug and test the dyes first, then wash it gently by immersion. If a rug is too fragile to wash safely, we tell you before we start.

How much does silk rug cleaning cost?

Silk, viscose and antique rugs are $5.00 to $5.50 per square foot. For example, a 5×8 silk rug is about $200 to $220, and an 8×10 is about $400 to $440. Your final price is confirmed after inspection, and pickup and delivery are free within 35 miles.

Why does vacuuming and spot cleaning not fix a soiled silk rug?

A vacuum only reaches surface soil, and spot cleaning can push soil deeper or leave residue and water marks on silk. A full wash removes soil from the whole rug.

How long does it take?

Typical turnaround is 7 to 10 business days from pickup, including 24 to 48 hours of monitored drying.

Do you pick up rugs in Camas?

Yes. Pickup and delivery are free in Camas (ZIP code 98607), which is inside our 35-mile free zone.
