The Situation

This hand-knotted Persian-style wool rug had spent years in a busy West Linn home. Kids, pets, tracked-in mud and the damp Pacific Northwest climate had left it heavily soiled and matted, and its colors had gone dull. Mud and grit are tough on wool because the soil sits deep in the pile and weighs it down, so a vacuum alone could not bring it back.

What We Found

The before photos show the mud, dirt and debris packed into the pile, including a close-up of the soil. Persian rugs react to water differently than machine-made rugs, so we tested the dyes before any washing and chose a gentle, pH-balanced approach for the wool.

How We Cleaned This Wool Persian Rug

  1. 1

    Pickup and dye testing

We picked the rug up and tested its dyes before any wet treatment, because dyes in a Persian rug can run.

  2. 2

    Dry soil removal

Dry dust extraction pulled the dry mud, grit and debris out of the dense wool pile before water was used.

  3. 3

    Full immersion wash and rinse

The rug was washed by full immersion with a mild, pH-balanced cleanser that is safe for wool, then rinsed with fresh water.

  4. 4

    Extraction and monitored drying

Excess water was extracted and the rug dried in our temperature and humidity-monitored room.

  5. 5

    Finishing and delivery

The fringe was hand-washed, the pile was groomed, and the rug was delivered back to the home.

The Result

After dry soil removal, an immersion wash and monitored drying, the rug came back with cleaner, brighter color and a clearer pattern, and the pile was less matted. Results depend on a rug’s age, dyes and wear, which is why we inspect and test first. The rug was delivered back to the West Linn home.

Care Tips for This Kind of Rug

  • For mud, let it dry first, then vacuum up the loose soil with suction only before treating any remaining spots.
  • Vacuum hand-knotted rugs without a beater bar and keep the vacuum off the fringe.
  • Plan a professional wash about every 2 years, or every 12 to 18 months with kids, pets or an entry rug.

Questions About This Project

Can you clean a hand-knotted Persian wool rug?

Yes. We inspect the rug, test the dyes and wash it by full immersion with a mild, pH-balanced cleanser. If a dye is unstable, we tell you before we go further.

How much does it cost to clean an 8×10 Persian wool rug?

An 8×10 rug is 80 square feet. Wool and hand-knotted rugs are $4.00 to $4.50 per square foot, so about $320 to $360. Your final price is confirmed after inspection, and pickup and delivery are free within 35 miles.

Can mud be washed out of a wool rug?

Often, yes. We remove the dry soil first, then wash by immersion so the dirt rinses out of the pile. Results depend on the rug’s dyes, age and wear.
