Detail photos

The Situation
This 8×10 silk rug is a family heirloom that had been forgotten in a mudroom for decades. Mudrooms collect soil and moisture, and silk handles both poorly, so the rug came to us heavily soiled. We picked it up from the family’s Lake Oswego home and brought it to our wash facility in Vancouver, WA.
What We Found
Silk is delicate when wet, so before any washing we inspected the rug and tested its dyes. The photos below show the heavy soiling and the fringe as they arrived.
What We Did
- 1
Inspection and dye testing
We checked the rug’s condition and tested its dyes before any wet treatment, because silk can be delicate and dyes can run.
- 2
Dry soil removal
Dry soil was extracted before water was used, so the wash could do its job.
- 3
Full immersion wash and rinse
The rug was washed by full immersion with a mild, pH-balanced cleanser and rinsed with fresh water.
- 4
Monitored drying and finishing
The rug dried in our temperature and humidity-monitored room, the fringe was hand-washed, and the rug was groomed for delivery.
The Result
After washing and monitored drying, the rug was returned to the family in Lake Oswego. Compare the before and after photos above to see the change. Our original write-up of this project describes the rug going back to the heart of family gatherings.
Care Tips for This Kind of Rug
- Vacuum with suction only and avoid beater bars. Keep the vacuum off the fringe.
- Keep silk rugs out of damp, high-traffic spots such as entryways and mudrooms.
- Blot spills with a clean white cloth and call a professional before treating silk yourself.
Questions About This Project
Can you clean an heirloom silk rug?
Often, yes. Silk is delicate when wet, so we inspect the rug and test the dyes first. If a rug is too fragile to wash safely, we tell you before we start.
How much does silk rug cleaning cost?
Silk, viscose and antique rugs are $5.00 to $5.50 per square foot, so an 8×10 silk rug is about $400 to $440. Your final price is confirmed after inspection, and pickup and delivery are free within 35 miles.
How long does it take?
Typical turnaround is 7 to 10 business days from pickup, including 24 to 48 hours of monitored drying.
Why is a mudroom hard on a silk rug?
Mudrooms collect dirt and moisture. Grit wears silk fibers, and damp conditions are hard on delicate rugs.
