The Result in Four Lines
- The rug

- The problem
- Years of shoes, pets and children left dark paths down the center and discoloration along the edges, with the grey gone murky and patchy.
- What we did
- Dry soil removal, a wool-safe enzyme pre-treatment, a gentle immersion wash with several rinses, spot treatment and climate-controlled drying.
- The result
- The grey looks more even and the dark traffic path is much lighter. Compare the photos below.
Before & After
The same grey wool runner before cleaning and after it was washed and dried.

What to notice
- Compare the dark path down the center of the runner in the two photos.
- Look at the edges, where dirt had collected and discolored the grey.
- The grey looks more even across the whole length.
The Situation
This hand-tufted grey wool runner had been in the main entryway of a Vancouver family home for about five years, taking the full load of shoes, pets and children. Regular vacuuming and spot cleaning were no longer enough. Dark paths had formed down the center, and the edges were discolored where dirt collected, so the grey had gone murky and uneven.
What We Found
Wool is durable but it soaks up oils and fine particles, and foot traffic grinds them into the fibers, where they weigh the pile down and make it gritty. Our inspection found heavy soiling, uneven yellowing and fading, and a mild stale odor, but no tears or moth damage. We chose a gentle immersion wash to avoid the shrinkage and color bleeding that harsh home methods can cause.
How We Cleaned This Wool Runner
- 1
Inspection and dry dusting
We inspected the runner, then removed the loose, dry soil, using compressed air to loosen embedded grit without stressing the fibers.
- 2
Wool-safe pre-treatment
A pH-balanced enzyme solution went on the soiled traffic lanes to break down oils and stains.
- 3
Gentle immersion wash
The runner was washed in a controlled bath with gentle agitation and low-moisture, wool-safe detergent, then rinsed several times to remove residue.
- 4
Spot treatment
Stubborn areas were spot-treated with wool spotters, taking care to avoid color migration.
- 5
Extraction and climate-controlled drying
Excess water was extracted and the runner air-dried in our climate-controlled room with fans.
- 6
Grooming and delivery
We brushed the pile to restore it and delivered the runner back to the home.
The Result
After washing and careful drying, the runner came back with a more even grey and much lighter traffic paths, and it went back to the entryway. Results depend on a rug’s age, dyes and wear, which is why we inspect first.
Care Tips for This Kind of Rug
- Vacuum wool with suction only, because a beater bar can damage the fibers. Go with the pile and vacuum hallway runners often.
- Ask guests to take their shoes off at the door, and use a breathable rug pad under wool.
- Rotate the runner every 3 to 6 months, and keep it out of direct sun and damp spots.
- Blot spills with a clean white cloth, avoid heat, and plan a professional wash about every 2 years, or every 12 to 18 months in a busy entryway.

Questions About This Project
Can you clean a wool hallway runner?
Yes. Wool runners in entryways and hallways take the most traffic, so we remove the dry soil first, wash gently by immersion with a wool-safe cleanser, and dry the rug in a climate-controlled room.
How much does it cost to clean a wool runner?
Wool rugs are $4.00 to $4.50 per square foot. A 3×9 runner is 27 square feet, about $108 to $122, and a 2×8 runner is 16 square feet, about $64 to $72. We confirm your price after inspection, and pickup and delivery are free within 35 miles.
Why do vacuuming and spot cleaning stop working on a runner?
Vacuuming only reaches surface dirt, and spot cleaning can leave residue. Foot traffic grinds soil into the fibers, so dark traffic paths need a full wash to release it.
Do you pick up rugs in Vancouver?
Yes. Pickup and delivery are free in Vancouver, WA, which is inside our 35-mile free zone. Check your ZIP code on our Vancouver page.
