The Situation

A Ridgefield, WA homeowner called us about an heirloom 8×10 white-and-blue silk rug. Years of heavy foot traffic, everyday spills and repeated pet accidents had left deep-set soil, visible staining and a persistent urine odor that had worked its way into the silk and the backing. Silk is one of the most delicate fibers we clean, and pet urine on top of abrasive traffic soil made this a high-risk job.

What We Found

Silk reacts poorly to harsh chemicals, high heat and aggressive scrubbing. Pet urine dries into crystals that keep releasing odor, and it can damage dye and fiber if it is not fully treated. This rug also had traffic lanes and spill marks that had bonded with the pile. Our goals were to remove the odor at its source, lift the soil and stains, and bring back the color and soft feel of the silk, without shrinkage, dye bleeding or fiber damage.

How We Cleaned This Silk Rug

  1. 1

    Pickup and inspection

After free pickup, we inspected the rug in detail at our facility and tested the dyes.

  2. 2

    Dry soil removal

Thorough vacuuming and dry soil extraction removed the bulk of the abrasive traffic dirt before any moisture touched the silk.

  3. 3

    Urine treatment

A bio-enzymatic treatment made for pet urine on natural fibers broke down the uric acid crystals and residue instead of masking the odor.

  4. 4

    Gentle immersion wash

A pH-balanced cleanser made for silk lifted the embedded soil and remaining staining while protecting the fiber.

  5. 5

    Spot treatment and extraction

Remaining spill marks were treated, then the rug was rinsed and the water extracted.

  6. 6

    Grooming and controlled drying

We hand groomed the pile for direction and luster, then dried the rug in our climate-controlled chamber to help prevent shrinking or distortion.

  7. 7

    Final inspection and odor check

Once fully dry, we checked the rug for both appearance and urine odor before delivery.

The Result

The rug came back with its white ground and blue pattern looking clearer. Heavy traffic soil lifted, the spill stains were reduced, and at our final inspection we checked for urine odor and found none. The silk kept its soft feel and structure. The owner put it back in the living room. Results depend on a rug’s age, dyes and damage, which is why we inspect and test first. If odor returns within 14 days, we re-treat at no charge.

Care Tips for This Kind of Rug

  • Blot pet accidents right away with clean white towels. Do not rub, and avoid heat, steam and ammonia-based cleaners on silk.
  • Call a professional quickly. Urine can damage silk dye if it sits. Our first-aid guide has details.
  • Vacuum silk with suction only and keep it out of the highest-traffic spots when you can.
