What Will My Rug Cost, Over Time?
Measure length times width to get square feet, then multiply by the rate for your fiber.
Quick Formula
- Square feet = length x width (round rug: 3.14 x radius x radius)
- Synthetic = square feet x $3.00 to $3.50
- Wool or hand-knotted = square feet x $4.00 to $4.50
- Silk, viscose or antique = square feet x $5.00 to $5.50
- Pickup and delivery = $0 within 35 miles
Cost Over Time
If you clean a wool rug every 2 years, the cost per month is small.
| Rug | Per cleaning | Every 2 years |
|---|---|---|
| 5×8 wool rug | $160-$180 | about $7-$8 / month |
| 8×10 wool rug | $320-$360 | about $13-$15 / month |
| 9×12 wool rug | $432-$486 | about $18-$20 / month |
We recommend every 2 years for normal use, or every 12 to 18 months with pets, young children or a busy entryway.
Six Things That Change the Price
Fiber
Synthetic, wool and silk behave differently when wet, so they are priced differently: $3.00 to $3.50, $4.00 to $4.50 and $5.00 to $5.50 per square foot.
Size
We price by square footage, so the cost grows evenly with the rug. Measure length times width.
Condition
Heavy soil and stains take more time. We give you a range up front and confirm your final price after inspection.
Pet odor
Pet odor treatment is priced additionally upon inspection, because the amount of treatment depends on how deep the problem goes.
Delicate or special rugs
Silk, viscose and antique rugs need extra care and are priced at the higher rate.
Cleaning method
We wash rugs by full immersion at our plant. Steam or in-home cleaning is cheaper but is a different service.
What does not change the price
- Pickup and delivery, which are free within 35 miles
- Condition notes and photos
- Dye testing before washing
- Monitored drying
- A re-clean at no charge if you are not satisfied on delivery

How much does rug cleaning cost in Vancouver, WA and Portland, OR?
At Benchmark, rug cleaning is $3.00 to $5.50 per square foot depending on fiber: $3.00 to $3.50 for synthetic, $4.00 to $4.50 for wool and hand-knotted, and $5.00 to $5.50 for silk, viscose and antique rugs. Pickup and delivery are free within 35 miles, and your final price is confirmed after inspection.
How much does it cost to clean an 8×10 rug?
An 8×10 rug is 80 square feet. At our rates that is about $240 to $280 for synthetic, $320 to $360 for wool or hand-knotted, and $400 to $440 for silk, viscose or antique.
Is pickup and delivery included in the price?
Yes. There is no separate fee for pickup or delivery within 35 miles of our Vancouver, WA plant. National cost guides list pickup and delivery at $25 to $50 elsewhere, so ask any cleaner what theirs costs.
Why does silk cost more to clean than wool?
Silk is more delicate when wet, so it needs gentler handling, more careful rinsing and slower, monitored drying. That extra care is why silk, viscose and antique rugs are priced at $5.00 to $5.50 per square foot.
Is there an extra charge for pet urine or odor?
Yes. Pet odor treatment is priced additionally upon inspection, because the cost depends on how deeply the odor has set. We confirm the price before we wash. If the odor returns within 14 days, we re-treat at no charge.
Will the price change after you inspect my rug?
We give you a price range when you schedule, based on size and fiber. After we inspect the rug, we confirm your final price, and we tell you before we wash if anything affects it.
Why is professional rug cleaning more than carpet cleaning?
Rugs are cleaned by the square foot and washed at a plant, with dye testing and monitored drying. Wall-to-wall carpet is cleaned in place at a much lower per-square-foot rate.
How much should I budget over time?
If you clean an 8×10 wool rug every 2 years, at $320 to $360 per cleaning, that works out to about $13 to $15 per month.
How do I measure my rug for a price?
Measure the length and width in feet and multiply them. For a round rug, multiply 3.14 by the radius squared. A photo and your best measurements are enough for a range.
Do you charge by the room or by the rug?
Neither. We charge by the square foot, which keeps the price fair for any size or shape.
How do your prices compare with national averages?
National guides report $2 to $8 per square foot overall, with hand-washed wool and Persian rugs often listed at $5 to $8. Our wool and hand-knotted rate is $4.00 to $4.50, and pickup and delivery are free. Methods differ, so compare like with like.
Can I get a quote by phone or photo?
Yes. Call (360) 696-4418, use the request form on this page, or email photos to scheduling@benchmarkrestores.com. A size, fiber and photo are enough for a range.
